Crown Trade Woodstain and Varnished: Extractives

Soluble constituents within timber species can result in stains or discolouration of decorative treatments and adjacent surfaces. The drying of decorative coatings can also be retarded.

Soluble salts within the adhesives used in exterior plywood and some chemically impregnated flame retardant treatments may be leached out under damp conditions. These generally have the appearance of white coloured surface deposits and are usually most noticeable on dark coloured, permeable finishes.

Solution:

Scrub and swab Oak, Teak, Iroko, Afrormosia, Idigbo, Cedar, etc with clean white spirit frequently changing the face of cloths. Allow white spirit to fully evaporate before overcoating.

Water soluble extractives should be removed by washing using clean water.
